Major roads in Eastern Visayas still passable - DPWH

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said that all major roads and bridges in Eastern Visayas remained passable even as it is being battered by super typhoon "Yolanda" with heavy rains and extremely strong winds as of Friday noon.

“As of 10:45 a.m. (Friday), all roads are still passable per received report of DPWH Bureau of Maintenance from Region 8,” said Randy del Rosario of the DPWH Public Information Division.

Del Rosario said the agency will continue to monitor areas hit by the super typhoon, perceived as the world's strongest cyclone this year and the strongest typhoon to hit land in history.

“Equipment and maintenance personnel are on standby for road clearing activities whenever necessary”, he said.

More than 20 areas in the Visayas were placed under public storm warning signal number 4 as the super typhoon slammed into Guiuan, Eastern Samar before dawn Friday.

The typhoon became even more stronger as it slammed into Guiuan. The extent of damage of the typhoon in Guiuan and other areas along its path have yet to be confirmed by the government.
