Northern Samar barangay chair bet faces murder rap

MANILA, Philippines - Police said on Wednesday that murder case has been filed against an opponent of a re-electionist barangay chairman who was shot dead two days before the village polls in Northern Samar.

Authorities said  the criminal case has been filed before the Office of the Provincial Prosecutor in Northern Samar against Gil Siervo and two of his still unidentified companions.
 
Siervo has been tagged as the primary suspect in the Oct. 26 killing of barangay chairman Santiago Limpiado of Brgy. Bantayan, San Roque town.
 
Reports showed that Limpiado, 57, had just attended a wedding reception and was about 60 meters from his house from when he was shot dead at  6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
 
Limpiado succumbed to two gunshot wounds in the abdomen. He died two hours later while undergoing medical treatment at the Catarman Doctor’s Hospital in Northern Samar’s capital, some 30 kilometers from the crime scene.
 
Police said that witnesses pointed to Siervo, Limpiado's opponent in the race for village chairmanship, as the assailant.
 
Siervo was with two other companions who served as look-outs during the attack, police said.
