Bohol quake death toll climbs to 206

MANILA, Philippines - The number of fatalities from the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that jolted Central Visayas last week has increased to 206, the state disaster response agency said Friday afternoon.

In its latest update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the death toll now includes 192 people in Bohol, 13 in Cebu and one in Siquijor.

The deadly earthquake that struck Sagbayan, Bohol also injured 724 people and affected over three million people while damaging public structures worth more than a billion pesos.

The quake damaged about 60 roads and bridges, over 54,000 houses, public buildings and several centuries-old churches.

President Benigno Aquino III on Thursday visited again the quake-hit areas in Bohol and assured that the government will help the victims and rehabilitate the province.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has recorded more than 2,000 aftershocks from last week's earthquake, but assured that there is no imminent threat in Bohol.
