Palace warns public vs quake donation scam

Louis Bacani - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang warned the public against those who are taking advantage of the situation in Central Visayas where a magnitude 7.2 earthquake killed over a hundred people.

In a statement, Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said they have received reports that some individuals claiming to represent him and Communications Secretary Ricky Carandang are soliciting monetary donations for the benefit of the earthquake victims.

"This is a spurious and shameless attempt to capitalize on tragedy for personal profit and greed," Lacierda said.

The Palace official urged those who have received such solicitations or those who have encountered the scammers to make a report.

The Office of the Presidential Spokesperson can be reached through email: [email protected]; or telephone: (02) 7360719.
