ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines - Residents staying in slopes and landslide-prone areas have been alerted after this city felt the intensity 7.2 earthquake that struck in Bohol province Tuesday morning.
Engineer Allan Rommel Labayog, chief of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology Phivolcs here, said the earthquake was also felt in this city at intensity 3, similar to the magnitude felt in Davao City, North Cotabato, and General Santos City.
Residents here are worried that the temblor would trigger landslide and soil erosion as the city and parts of the region were submerged by flood waters following incessant rains.
Labayog assuaged fears of possible landslide or soil erosion citing the earthquake intensity in the city is weak to trigger another disaster.
“If the event (powerful tremor) is close enough it will be a recipe for disaster,†Labayog said.
Labayog said the aftershocks that continued to occur in Bohol province appeared to be strong as it was even recorded by the sensor of the Zamboanga Seismic center.
