241 aftershocks hit Bohol 7 hours after deadly quake

MANILA, Philippines - (UPDATED) A total of 241 earthwuakes were recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) seven hours after a magnitude-7.2 tremor struck provinces in Central Visayas on Tuesday morning.

Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum said that the 241 aftershocks were recorded as of 3:15 p.m.

Solidum earlier said the temblor, which was caused by the vertical movement of the East Bohol Fault, was recorded at 8:12 a.m. Its epicenter was traced in Carmen, Bohol.

He said that the number or frequency of aftershocks will "diminish in time." He earlier said that the aftershocks may continue for a week.

The strongest aftershock measured at magnitude 4.8 quake that rattled Tagbilaran City at 12:22 p.m. or more than four hours after the major Bohol earthquake.

Phivolcs said the aftershock was felt at Intensity V in Tagbilaran City, which was also the strongest hit by the magnitude-7.2 earthquake.

The city was also hit by a magnitude 4.7 earthquake at 4:36 p.m.

The 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Bohol that was felt in nearby areas in Visayas. At least 20 people have been confirmed killed after the quake.
