Iloilo village head survives attack; kin dead

Jennifer P. Rendon - The Philippine Star

ILOILO, Philippines – A village chief cheated death after at least five people opened fire at him yesterday morning in Barangay Tabucan, some five kilometers from the town proper of Calinog this province.

While Eustaquio Porras, 42, chairman of Barangay Lonoy, survived the attack, his nephew, 25-year-old Mikmay Lemana, was killed.

Police recovered empty shells from a 12-gauge shotgun, .38-caliber revolver, and .45-caliber pistol at the crime scene.

Chief Inspector Rogelio Ortigas said the incident could not be considered as election-related although Porras is a barangay official.

“The probable motive is vengeance,” he said.

Almost a month ago, Porras, Lemana, and three others were charged with frustrated murder following the slay attempt on a certain Noel Insular.
