Only 200 gather at EDSA Shrine as prayer rally vs pork starts

Dennis Carcamo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - People started to flock to EDSA Shrine on Wednesday for the prayer vigil calling for the total abolition of pork barrel funds of government officials.

As of noon, only 200 people have arrived at the EDSA Shrine and the People Power Monument for the prayer vigil.

Organizers expect the crowd to balloon by the afternoon and reach their target of 5,000 people before it ends at 4 p.m.

Around 500 policemen were deployed at the vicinity of the Shrine aside from those tasked to inspect large groups marching to the site.

Majority of the people who have arrived at the site were wearing white, the symbolic color for the protest against the use of pork barrel funds by government officials.

Meanwhile, several street vendors made a "killing" and took advantage of the event, selling bottled waters, snacks, and even T-shirts printed with words calling for the abolition of the pork barrel system.

Last month, thousands of people gathered at the Luneta Park for the first protest against the misuse of pork barrel funds of lawmakers.
