Taguig gives scholarship to 2,216 studes

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Taguig City government has recently granted 2,216 students scholarships under its P300-million Lifeline Assistance for Neighbors In-Need (LANI) Scholarship Program.

“I congratulate the students, along with their parents, who are my inspiration in championing the LANI scholarship program. It is my firm belief that education is still the best way to our children’s success,” Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano said.

“To our scholars, old and new, I challenge all of you to reach out for your dreams and help lead a better life for your families," she added.

Bootes Lopos, officer-in-charge of the Taguig City Policy and Education Office said the new batch of scholars for the first semester of this academic year reached over 3,700.

“The first batch of LANI scholars was awarded their financial assistance last May 29,” Lopos said.

The Taguig city government had earlier increased the funding for its scholarship program from last year's P200 million to P300 million in 2013 as part of its efforts to boost the education sector.

The LANI program has seven basic categories of scholarship: basic scholarship or financial assistance; full scholarships; state universities and colleges (SUCs) and local universities and colleges (LUCs) scholarships; premier/specialized schools scholarships; leaders and educators advancement and development (LEAD); review assistance program for bar and board reviewees; and priority courses and skills training.

To date, the LANI Scholarship Program has given away over 27,000 scholarships to poor but deserving students in Taguig. - Mike Frialde
