Bulacan execs urging monthly mosquito larval surveillance
MALOLOS CITY , Philippines – Bulacan officials are urging the conduct of monthly mosquito larval surveillance in the different barangays to eradicate dengue.
This came as the dreaded disease recorded its third death in the province, Apple Mae Domingo, a 16-year-old resident of Barangay Ligas here, last July 22.
Domingo was a first-year engineering student at the Bulacan State University.
Dr. Joy Gomez, head of the Provincial Public Health Office (PPHO), said that aside from the government’s 4 o’clock habit in getting rid of mosquito-breeding sites, regular larval surveillance should also be conducted, especially in villages with high incidence of dengue.
According to Gomez, the PPHO has available larvicidal chemicals that can be used in identifying areas where dengue-carrying mosquitoes thrive and breed.
Records show that a total of 1,338 dengue cases had been reported in the province from January to July this year. The number is lower than the 2,561 recorded during the same period last year.
Gomez, however, warned that dengue cases may still surge, as more cases are usually reported in the months of August and September.
