First dolphin born in captivity dies
SUBIC BAY Freeport, Philippines - The Subic Bay Marine Exploratorium Inc. (SBMEI) which took care of the calf after it was born in its facility, announced the death 8 p.m. Sunday.
In a statement, SBMEI said they are "deeply saddened" at the loss, but the event will also motivate them to continue their "successful dolphin-breeding program.â€
SBMEI said it found that one lung of the calf was significantly smaller than the other.
It was also revealed that there was an indication of significant infection associated with that undersized organ which spread to the
other lung and liver.
The statement added that the calf’s organs were sufficiently developed to support life but not to support the demand of the baby’s growth and development.
The unnamed baby dolphin was born on July 7 and died Sunday (July 21).
The calf’s mother named Vi has been separated and is now with the other dolphin.
Carlo Magno, the Director for Animal Care said that Vi proved to be an excellent mother, properly handling and taking care of her calf throughout.
“Vi and the calf established a solid nursing pattern, which was observed by all the other female
 dolphins. This community learning can have a huge impact on the success of future babies.†Magno added.
It is still unclear whether the baby dolphin will be buried or preserved. - Anthony Bayarong
