MMDA defers 7 of 9 road repair projects on Edsa

Dennis Carcamo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority on Friday announced that it only approved two out of nine road reblocking and repair projects of the Department of Public Works and Highways along the stretch of Edsa.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said they had to defer the seven other road repair works scheduled from July 19 to July 22 because it might cause more traffic problems during the State of the Nation Address of President Benigno Aquino III on Monday.

Allowed to push through are the reblocking of the third lane of Edsa-Monumento Circle southbound and the portion of Edsa from MCU Hospital to Gen. Santos Street northbound, both in Caloocan City.

The two portions of Edsa will be closed to traffic from July 19 to 22 from 10 p.m. to 5 am.

"We didn’t issue permits to the seven other reblocking operations this weekend because we would be implementing traffic rerouting for the President’s SONA on Monday, and the road closures along Edsa might have adverse effects on traffic flow," Tolentino said.

The MMDA denied the pronouncement of the DPWH that the nine Edsa repair works set this weekend will push through.

As agreed  upon with the DPWH, Tolentino reiterated that no repair and excavation works along major thoroughfares in Metro Manila such as Edsa would be implemented without MMDA's expressed consent.

Tolentino said  that the agency would have to inspect the proposed sites for reblocking and the schedule of the repair works, among other requirements, before it issues permits.

Deferred for implementation are the reblocking  operations in the portion of Edsa from Gen. Santos Street (3rd lane, southbound) in Pasay City; Home Depot to Oliveros Footbridge, (3rd lane, northbound), Quezon City; JAC Motors to Dario Bridge 1 (4th lane, southbound), Quezon City; Reliance Street to Liberated Street (northbound), Mandaluyong City; Boni Avenue to Mayon Street (southbound), Mandaluyong City; Buendia to Guadalupe bridge (outer lane, northbound), and Guadalupe bridge to Bernardino Street (outer lane, southbound) in Makati City.
