MANILA, Philippines - Some informal settlers on Monday threw stones and bottles at policemen who tried to disperse them from a main thoroughfare in Quezon City.
Reports said the informal settlers from Sitio San Roque hurled bottles, explosive pillboxes, and even human waste at the Quezon City Police District anti-riot policemen who attempted to clear the area of the barricade on the corner of Agham Road and Quezon Avenue.
The squatters have gathered in the area and barricaded the thoroughfares as early as 8 a.m. after learning that the makeshift houses would be demolished today, reports added.
Warning shots were also fired in the air reportedly by policemen in the area, the report said.
For its part, the Quezon City police denied that there is a scheduled demolition of the houses in the area, noting authorities are still waiting for an order the city government.
