MANILA, Philippines - Militant group Bayan and urban poor organizations will troop to Manila City Hall on Monday to protest the plan of Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada to clear streets vendors and demolish makeshift houses of informal settlers living along waterways and esteros.
Some 300 members of the Bayan-National Capital Region and vendors at Luneta Park and Morayta said they will welcome the first day of Estrada in office with a protest action in opposition to the mayor's move.
The protesters also dared Estrada to be true to his ‘pro-poor’ promises during the last election and act as a genuine opposition during his term.
During his inaugural speech last June 30, Estrada bared his plan to clear the streets of Manila from vendors and his marching order to demolish and relocate residents living along the waterways.
He also blamed residents along esteros as the cause of flooding in the capital city.
He added that his administration plans to clean vendors, whom he blamed for traffic jams in the city.
The groups will seek to sit down with Estrada to discuss issues of urban poor settlers and vendors in Manila including the pending demolition in Road 10 in Tondo district, which would pave the way for the North Harbor Port Privatization project.
