NPA rebels kill 2 soldiers in Surigao
MANILA, Philippines - Two soldiers were killed in heavy fighting on Monday between government troops and the New People’s Army (NPA) in Lianga, Surigao del Sur.
Maj. Leo Bongosia, spokesman of the 4th Infantry Division, identified the slain soldiers as Pfc. Nagdar Irad of Patikul, Sulu and Pfc. Merwin Tion of Talisayan, Misamis Oriental.
Operating elements of the 29th Infantry Battalion were conducting combat operations in Sitio Tibog, Barangay San Isidro at about 2 p.m. Monday when they were fired upon by an undetermined number of NPA rebels.
Bongosia said that the firefight lasted for only five minutes.
The military's pursuit operations are ongoing.
