MANILA, Philippines --A ranking official of the Cavite provincial police who has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a court for being a "protector" of a shabu laboratory in La Union has surrendered to his superiors.
Cavite deputy provincial police director for administration Superintendent Dionisio Borromeo is now in the custody of his superiors after learning of the verdict on the case before the Bauang, La Union court, Chief Superintendent Benito Estipona, Calabarzon regional director, said.
"Wala naman siyang (Borromeo) balak na takbuhan 'yung responsibilidad so he voluntarily submitted himself doon sa kanyang provincial director," Estipona said.
Estipona also said Borromeo has been sick since Monday that it is why he was unable to report to work.
"May sakit siya kaya hindi siya nakapasok since Monday. Then kahapon upon the instruction, kinontak sya ng PD (provincial director) so nagpakita naman sya agad at saka submitted himself under the custody ng PD even without pa 'yung kopya ng warrant," Estipona said.
Estipona said he expects the court which handles Borromeo's case to issue a warrant of arrest.
"Ang next step dyan since 'yung La Union court ang nag issue ng warrant of arrest. We will make a return of the warrant of arrest doon sa La Union court so dadalhin doon si Superintendent Borromeo and it is now up to the court to issue another order kung ano magiging disposition dito kay Colonel Borromeo," the Calabarzon police head said.
Aside from Borromeo, a former Ilocos region police mobile group head, Judge Ferdinand Fe also handed down a guilty verdict against Police Officer 3 Joey Abang, who was sentenced to a jail term of between 12 to 20 years.
Following the discovery of the shabu laboratory in July 2008, the facility’s caretaker tagged Borromeo as one of its protectors.
