MANILA, Philippines - A number of police officers will attend the flag-raising ceremony in select schools across the country today to recite the Panatang Makabayan as the new school year opens.

“We believe that a simple recitation of Panatang Makabayan in front of elementary pupils will promote some level of patriotism among the students,” said Chief Superintendent Generoso Cerbo Jr., Philippine National Police spokesman.

“We instructed our policemen to give their best to establish the trust and confidence of children. The meeting between our policemen and students will also highlight the sacrifices and acts of heroism of policemen,” said Cerbo, adding that the 148,000-strong police force is ready for today’s opening of classes.

He said the move could also improve the image of policemen among school children.
