ORMOC CITY, Philippines – He described himself as just an “average student” who “invested” in his dream, as “nothing worthwhile is easy.”

Now Jeymar Pelin Dumagsa, who placed fifth in this year’s licensure examination for certified public accountants (CPAs), is reaping the fruit of his labor.

A former college dropout, Dumagsa, 22, son of businessman Jayger and Marilyn Dumagsa, is a graduate of Western Leyte College (WLC).

He is currently in Manila to meet potential employers who have been calling him since the results of the CPA licensure exam was released on Tuesday by the Professional Regulation Commission.

Dumagsa described himself as an average student although he received fourth honors in Grade 4.

He said he dropped out of school during his first year in college in Tacloban City.

After two years, he decided to go back to school and took up accountancy on his parents’ advice.

Dumagsa also topped the regional accountancy competition, according to Manuel Edaño, dean of WLC’s accountancy department.

The WLC commended Dumagsa for placing No. 5 in the CPA licensure exam.

Edaño said that in recognition of his feat, the school will honor Dumagsa in a simple ceremony and will refund his tuition.
