Soldier killed, 3 more hurt in Zamboanga clash

ZAMBOANGA City, Philippines - Government troops clashed with 60 fully-armed New People’s Army (NPA) rebels shortly before Thursday noon in the border of Zamboanga del Sur, leaving a soldier dead and 3 others wounded.
 
Chief Inspector Ariel Huesca, Spokesman of Police Regional Office 9 (PRO), said the encounter sparked when troops under the 55th Infantry Battalion caught up with the rebels at the boundary of Tambulig town, Zamboanga del Sur and Barangay Anong in Bonifacio town, Misamis Occidental.
 
Capt. Jefferson Somera, spokesman of the 1st Army Division, said they received reports that the rebels were massing up and planning to conduct attacks and extortion activities in the area.
 
Both officials said that as troops were sent to the area, firefight ensued for 30 minutes which left undetermined casualties on the rebel group.
 
The lone government fatality was identified as certain Corporal Depositario while wounded were junior officer Lt. Jose Artemio Pamor, platoon leader, corporal Joseph Vincoy, and private Rudy Lee.
 
The police said the rebels splintered into small groups and retreated with their casualties towards several directions, including in the areas of barangays Dimalinao and Mayamaya of Tambulig town, Barangay Bogo Kalabat, Josefina town all in Zamboanga del Sur and in Don Victoriano, Misamis Occidental.
 
Somera said the troops recovered from the encounter site personal belongings, subversive documents, foodstuff, assorted ammunitions, electrical wirings, detonator switch, and a gallon of shrapnel intended for bomb making.
 
Police and military have set checkpoints while intelligence units were monitoring local hospitals checking patient confined with bullet wound.
 
Huesca said a barangay intelligence network was also established in the different villages to monitor the presence of the escaping rebels.
