MANILA, Philippines - An Intensity 5 earthquake hit Baguio City yesterday but there was no immediate report of damage or injuries, state seismologists said.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the magnitude 4.5-quake occurred at 3:16 p.m. with its epicenter traced at 13 kilometers southeast of Baguio City.

Phivolcs said the tremor was “strong” and “generally felt by people indoors and outdoors.”

Classes in the elementary and high school levels in the summer capital and at the University of Baguio were suspended due to the quake, causing massive traffic jams.

The quake also was felt at Intensity 2 in Agoo and San Fernando, La Union.

A magnitude-4.0 earthquake also rocked Occidental Mindoro yesterday.

Phivolcs said the tremor occurred at 7:40 a.m. and was centered at 19 kilometers southwest of Looc, Occidental Mindoro.

It was felt at Intensity 3 in Lubang, Occidental Mindoro.

Phivolcs said quakes of magnitudes 4.0 and 3.5 were also recorded in Surigao del Norte and Davao Oriental, respectively.

Phivolcs said aftershocks were not expected from the quakes.
