Fisherman shot dead in grandchild’s party

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines – A 60-year-old grandfather was shot dead by a drinking partner during the birthday party of his granddaughter in Abulug, Cagayan, according to a belated report reaching the provincial police office here yesterday.

Police said the victim, Tomas Hipolito, was shot in the chest by fellow fisherman Terry Marantan, 34, at the height of their verbal tussle during a drinking bout.

The shooting sent guests, mostly children, scampering to safety. The celebrator’s maternal grandmother, Virginia Oliva, 72, was hit by a stray bullet in the forehead and was taken to the Cagayan Valley Regional Medical Center here.

Marantan fled after the shooting.
