House leaders urge public, poll candidates to observe gun ban
MANILA, Philippines - House leaders on Monday called on candidates and the public to observe the 150-day election gun ban which started last Sunday.
"As aspirants for elective posts, we must comply with Commission on Elections (Comelec) rules. And we call on the public to be vigilant and report violations to authorities," Deputy Speaker and Zamboanga City Rep. Ma. Isabelle Climaco said, adding that the public and candidates have roles to play to ensure the effectiveness of the gun ban.
Meanwhile, Rep. Roger Mercado of Southern Leyte said an effective gun is important in having an honest, orderly and peaceful elections.
"We should all responsibly do our share in observing the ban to achieve honest, orderly and peaceful elections," said Mercado, who is also the chair of the House Committee on Transportation.
Comelec Chair Sixto Brillantes, Jr. earlier said permits to carry firearms outside residence are "suspended and shall be without force and effect" until June 12.
Carrying or bearing of firearms within the gun ban period is considered an election offense, Brillantes added.
