34 firecracker injuries recorded in Central Mindanao

COTABATO CITY, Philippines - Health authorities recorded a total of 34 firecracker-related injuries in Central Mindanao during the New Year revelry, with South Cotabato and surrounding areas accounting for the highest number of incidents.
The information office of the Department of Health in Region 12 said in a text advisory that 15 of the victims were aged 10 to 15.
Five of the 34 victims were residents of Cotabato City, according to the Department of Health's regional office in Central Mindanao.
The regional health office said 14 residents of South Cotabato were injured and treated in government hospitals and two patients were treated for firecracker injuries in General Santos City.
Single shot and automatic gun bursts were heard in some parts of Maguindanao and Cotabato City, but police and military authorities said they did not receive any report of injuries related to use of guns by revelers.
Col. Prudencio Asto, public affairs chief of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division, said members of all military units under the division religiously complied with the directive not to use firearms during the revelry.
