Work on Leyte road to resume

ORMOC CITY, Philippines – Work on the long-awaited Albuera-Burauen Road, started during the Arroyo administration, will resume in 2013 and is hoped to be finished before the new year ends.  

This was confirmed by engineers Lino Gonzales and Ma. Margarita Junia, of Leyte’s fourth and second engineering districts, respectively.

The completion of the Albuera-Burauen Road is not only envisioned to cut road travel from Tacloban City to this city, but will also improve peace and order in the area which is said to be “influenced” by communist rebels.

This December alone, at least three encounters between soldiers and the insurgents took place in the area. The resurgence of the rebel movement in the province, though declared a “manageable conflict,” has led Richard Gomez, husband and chief of staff of Leyte fourth district Rep. Lucy Torres-Gomez, to suggest tapping the Army Engineering Brigade for the road project. 

Gomez noted that the brigade was also tapped to build an ABS-CBN-donated classroom in Barangay Salvacion, not only finishing the work on time but also fostering closer ties between the rural folk and the Army.
