Subic power plant gets ECC

Bebot Sison Jr. - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) issued and approved recently the environmental compliance certificate (ECC) for the 600-megawatt coal-fired power plant project of the Redondo Peninsula Energy (RP).

“Securing the ECC amendment further strengthens our commitment to strictly adhere to the process and onward to ensure that the project’s construction and eventual operation is environmentally compliant and state-of-the-art,” RP Energy president Aaron Domingo said in a statement.

The power plant will be constructed at the Redondo Peninsula inside the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

The project was previously granted an ECC for a 300-MW plant but with the entry of Meralco as majority owner, the company decided to expand the project which necessitated an amendment to include an additional 300 MW.

RP Energy is a joint project of Manila Electric Co.’s wholly owned subsidiary Meralco PowerGen Corp., Therma Power Inc., a subsidiary of Aboitiz Power Corp., and Taiwan Cogeneration Corp.’s subsidiary Taiwan Cogeneration International Corp. Meralco PowerGen is the majority shareholder of the joint venture.
