The Philippine Star

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines – A municipal councilor in Abra and his brother were killed in an ambush last Thursday, authorities said.

Councilor Rey Tandi of Tineg town and his brother Roy were reportedly on their way home aboard a motorcycle when they were waylaid in Barangay Vira.

Their assailants, according to reports, were armed with an M-16 Armalite rifle and a .45-caliber pistol.

Tandi sustained bullet wounds in the chest, killing him on the spot. His brother was hit in the head and neck.

Tandi survived an ambush in 2007 by supposed communist rebels for leading the anti-insurgency drive in Tineg town. – Charlie Lagasca, Artemio Dumlao, Raymund Catindig, Teddy Molina

Before Christmas Eve in 2010, Tandi accidentally fatally shot his own daughter in the chest as he and his wife grappled for a gun during a quarrel.

Abra is one of 15 provinces tagged as hotpots in the 2013 polls.
