PMA gets new superintendent

Fort Del Pilar, Baguio City  – The Philippine Military Academy, the country’s premier military officers’ training institution, has a new chief – Lt. Gen. Irineo Espino.

Outgoing Superintendent Major Gen Nonato Peralta Jr., handed his post to Espino in a turnover rites presided by AFP Vice Chief of Staff Lt. Gen Noel Coballes at the Borromeo Field.

Espino, a member of PMA class “Matapat” of 1979, was formerly AFP Inspector General before taking the helm of the PMA, while Peralta Jr., also a member of PMA class of 1979, will assume as the new Commander of the 2nd Infantry Division, Philippine Army (PA) in Tanay, Rizal,  replacing Major Gen Eduardo Del Rosario.

According to PMA Information chief Captain Agnes Lynette Flores,  Peralta focused on cadet training, ensuring that what cadets learned in the Academy would complement the AFP's program of instilling the spirit of “bayanihan” among would-be soldiers.

Peralta also saw to it that the cadets were given a foundation on peace-building initiatives and stakeholders-engagement. Respect for human rights and the rule of law were also given emphasis during his stint at the PMA.

A new PMA roadmap was crafted to have a deeper sense of leadership and understanding for the constitution.

The PMA curriculum underwent major changes, as socio-humanistic courses were added to balance the techno-scientific disciplines, with a view toward training and developing a cadet to become a well-rounded officer.
