Apayao councilor faces logging raps

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines – Police have arrested and filed charges of illegal logging against an incumbent female municipal councilor of Luna, Apayao for allegedly transporting furniture made of narra hardwood on Monday.

Chief Superintendent Rodrigo de Gracia, Cagayan Valley police director, said 10 high-back dining chairs, a set of door and door jam made of narra were seized from a Starex van apparently rented by councilor Cecile Caluya and registered to a certain Bienvenido Garrido that was intercepted at a police checkpoint in Barangay San Juan, Sta. Praxedes, Cagayan.

The seized items and the van are now held at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources office in Sta. Praxedes town.
