9 fishermen nabbed, 3 vessels seized in Camarines Norte
LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines – At least nine fishermen were arrested and three fishing vessels were seized in a series of operations against illegal fishing in Sta. Elena town in Camarines Norte on Monday, reports reaching Camp General Simeon Ola yesterday said.
The Camarines Norte police said the first operation by the Sta. Elena police and personnel of the Bantay-Dagat Intensified Campaign Against Illegal Fishing in Barangay Pulonguit-guit resulted in the arrest of F/V Ka Jovel captain Levie Castroverde, 62; and fishermen Leonilo Padernal,42; and Edgar Veron,34, all residents of Barangay San Lorenzo.
F/V Kerby was seized and its captain Dante Manalo, 43; and his companions Joven Nopia, 23; and Eric Veran ,31, also of Barangay San Lorenzo, were arrested in another operation.
Another fishing boat locally known as “kalansisi,” was also seized for using fine nets in the prohibited portion of the coastal waters. The police identified its captain as Tiotimo Allego, 56; and his personnel Manuelito Cabantoc, 61, and Romeo Bituin, 52.
Police said the arrested fishermen were released on bail as charges for violation of the Fishery Code of the Philippines and local ordinances were filed against them.
