Fire damages cables of 2 Agus power plants
MANILA, Philippines – Control cables of the Agus 6 and 7 hydropower plants were damaged in a fire last Saturday, cutting available power supply in electricity-starved Mindanao by 166 megawatts (MW).
In a statement, state-owned National Power Corp. (Napocor) said its personnel were working double-time to bring the Agus 6 and 7 hydropower plants back on-line.
Romero Pacilan, spokesman of Napocor’s Mindanao Generation Group, said the company was working with the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) to complete the restoration of the control cable system on Friday.
“Once we bring Units 3 and 4 (of Agus 6) back on-stream, we can immediately contribute about 80 MW to the grid,” Pacilan said.
The fire broke out at the control cable tunnel leading to the Maria Cristina switchyard.
