- The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Army troops in Bukidnon foiled an attempt by communist rebels to stage a landmine attack as they seized an explosive and other paraphernalia in an operation last Tuesday.

Members of the 8th Infantry Battalion recovered an improvised explosive with a detonating cord about 30 meters long and other paraphernalia during a combat operation in Barangay Linabo, Quezon town.

1Lt. Ali Dan Dumalahay, 8th IB spokesman, said their Bravo Company received information from local residents that the rebels had planted a landmine along the barangay road.

Upon reaching the area, troops led by 1Lt. Jonald Fallar found and recovered the explosive.

Lt. Col. Jose Cuerpo II, 8th IB commander, said the use of landmines is prohibited under the Comprehensive Agreement on the Respect for Human Rights Humanitarian Law. – Alexis Romero, Jaime Laude
