Davao politicians engaged in mining warned

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Politicians involved in small-scale mining operations in Davao Oriental could possibly face charges, especially if they are found to have used government-owned equipment in these activities.

Edilberto Arreza, Region 11 chief of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, issued the warning after being informed of the report by the task force created by Mati City Mayor Michelle Rabat to look into the gold-rush site at the boundary of Barangay Don Salvador Lopez in Mati City and Tarragona town.

In a report before the City Peace and Order Council this week, Mati City environment and natural resources officer Eddie Cobacha mentioned several personalities who have tunnels in the gold-rush site.

Arreza said among the violations possibly committed by the politicians are abuse of authority, conduct unbecoming of a public official, and illegal mining.

He said though that complaints must be filed against these politicians before the proper forum.

Cobacha, along with members of the task force, went to the gold-rush site last July 9 upon orders of Rabat.

Cobacha said there are about 100 tunnels and around 3,000 to 5,000 in the area. He also noted several unlicensed motorcycles going to the site from Mati City.

Cobacha said there was also indiscriminate cutting of trees in the area.
