Livelihood program for illegal gambling workers launched in Laguna

STA. CRUZ, Laguna, , Philippines  – The Philippine National Police-Calabarzon and local officials here launched yesterday a livelihood program for those who lost their jobs as a result of the campaign against all forms of illegal gambling in Region 4A.

Senior Superintendent Gilbert Cruz, Laguna police director, said at least 150 people involved in illegal gambling, including bet collectors, bookies and operators are also undergoing training for vocational courses at the provincial capitol and Camp Heneral Paciano in Sta. Cruz, Laguna.

Calabarzon police director Chief Superintendent James Melad said at least 800 illegal gambling workers in San Pedro, Biñan, Sta. Rosa, Calamba City, Cabuyao, Los Baños and the fourth district of Laguna are expected to avail themselves of the program.

“We will prepare them for better jobs. Most of them have taken vocational courses such as welding, cosmetology, food processing, auto repair and electrical wiring and reflexology” Cruz said.

The displaced workers will also receive financial assistance from Laguna Gov. Jeorge Ejercito.
