3 die of leptospirosis in Cagayan

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines  – Three persons have died of leptospirosis in Cagayan province this year, reports said. 

The provincial health office said the fatalities were among the 71 reported cases since January this year, more than triple the 22 cases reported in the same period last year. 

The fatalities were residents of the towns of Buguey, Lal-lo and Iguig. Tuao town had the most number of cases, followed by Baggao, Lal-lo and Solana, with the victims aged three to 66 years old. 

Leptospirosis is an infection commonly transmitted to humans when water contaminated by animal urine, most commonly rats, gets into contact with open wounds.
