Camarines STL operator denies being jueteng front

- Aie Balagtas See -

MANILA, Philippines - A Camarines Sur-based small town lottery (STL) operator raided by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) last month has denied serving as a front for the illegal numbers game jueteng.

In a statement, Everchance Gaming Corp. (EGC) president Osler Canlas accused the DILG of “singling out” his firm, which was licensed by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office.

“In (some) provinces, the gaming operators fill up private pockets and hardly pay anything to the government except the yearly business permit fees,” Canlas said.

Canlas also asked how EGC could have engaged in jueteng when it remitted millions of pesos to mandated government beneficiaries.

More than 50 people supposedly working for EGC were arrested when the DILG’s Office of Internal Security conducted a series of raids in Camarines Sur starting March 23.
