MANILA, Philippines – Soldiers engaged in retrieval operations in earthquake-ravaged villages in Negros Oriental also distributed P2 million worth of relief goods to the evacuees.
The soldiers donated their one-day pay as their contribution to help address the needs of the earthquake victims.
This developed as National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council executive director Benito Ramos announced yesterday that the ongoing retrieval operations in Barangay Solongon in La Libertad town and Barangay Planas in Guihulngan City would be terminated tomorrow.
Ramos said the retrieval operations could have been ended today but were extended upon the request of the local governments.
The decision to terminate the retrieval operations came as joint Army and police rescue teams have failed to recover more bodies from the quake-devastated villages, Ramos said.
He said the two devastated communities would be developed into memorial sites.
