MANILA, Philippines - The mayor of Carranglan, Nueva Ecija and his driver were wounded in an ambush in Guimba town yesterday afternoon.
A report reaching Camp Crame said Mayor Restituto Abad and his driver- bodyguard, Pfc. Saty Duclayan were shot by one of two men riding on a motorcycle at around 3:30 p.m. in Barangay Saranay.
Abad was shot in the left armpit, left cheek and left arm while Duclayan suffered gunshot wounds in the neck and head.
Abad and Duclayan are in critical condition at a local hospital as of yesterday afternoon.
Guimba police said Abad had just attended a Masonic installation at Lodge 167 and were on their way home to Carranglan when the attack happened.
The victims were riding Abad’s white Ford Everest (SHY-508) and had just stopped at an intersection when the unidentified gunman shot at them.
Police said one of the suspects, Jose Berlino, 49, who drove the motorcycle, was arrested. His companion fled.
Guimba police said the shooting could be politically motivated.
