Abu Sayyaf bombs Sulu bridge
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – Suspected Abu Sayyaf members blew up a bridge in Panamao town in Sulu at past midnight Wednesday, a military official said.
Lt. Col. Randolf Cabangbang, spokesman for Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom), said no casualty was reported in the explosion that hit the Kandayok Bridge, some 50 meters away from a Marine detachment.
Initial investigation showed that the improvised explosive device barely damaged the bridge, which remains passable.
Cabangbang said the explosion could be a diversionary tactic. He said soldiers have been on alert following attacks on the Marine bases in Indanan and Patikul town on New Year’s Eve.
