New military adviser to peace panel named

- Jose Rodel Clapano -

MANILA, Philippines - Former Army brigade commander Brig. Gen. Leo Ferrer has been named military adviser of the government peace panel negotiating with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

Ferrer assumed the post left vacant by Brig. Gen. Restituto Aguilar who retired in August last year.

Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Teresita Deles expressed confidence that Ferrer’s involvement in the peace process will boost the government’s efforts to sign a peace agreement with the MILF.

She said Ferrer was among the original members and secretariat head of the government’s Ad Hoc Joint Action Group (AHJAG) which was established in 2004.

The AHJAG is a joint effort of the government and the MILF that seeks to isolate lawless elements that take refuge in or near MILF communities.

“I am pleased that someone like Brig. Gen. Ferrer, who’s bringing with him rich insights and experiences, will be working closely with our negotiating panel,” Deles said.

Ferrer was the former commander of Task Force General Santos and the Army’s 601st Infantry Brigade in Tacurong, Sultan Kudarat.
