Widespread rains seen in eastern, southern Mindanao

- Evelyn Macairan -

MANILA, Philippines - A forecaster of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration yesterday said a low-pressure area (LPA) would dampen the New Year celebration in the southern and eastern parts of Mindanao.

Weather forecaster Rene Paciente said the LPA would bring widespread rains in these areas.

Paciente said that according to their 2 a.m. forecast yesterday, an LPA would also bring scattered rainshowers to the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro that were badly hit by tropical storm “Sendong” last Dec. 16.

“While we are expecting rain over Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro City, the volume would be minimal compared to the volume of rain that would fall in the southern and eastern parts of Mindanao,” said Paciente.

But he added that even if an LPA was detected in Mindanao, there is a small possibility that this would intensify and develop into a tropical depression.

As of 2 a.m. yesterday, the LPA was spotted at 520 kilometers east-southeast of General Santos City. It was reportedly moving westward and might not make landfall.

But Paciente said he could not fully guarantee that the LPA would remain on its course since LPAs are known to have an erratic pattern. “So there is that possibility that it would change its position,” he said.

In Metro Manila, Paciente said only isolated to scattered light rains are expected today.
