MANILA, Philippines - A former village councilman who joined the Abu Sayyaf in its terrorist activities was arrested Wednesday in Basilan, authorities said.
The arrest of Jumari Bagsik, 45, alias Jumaril Bagsik and Jurail Bagsik, is part of the aggressive drive of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) to account for wanted persons involved in heinous crimes.
CIDG chief Director Samuel Pagdilao Jr. said his men arrested Bagsik in Basilan after three months of surveillance.
Pagdilao also said Bagsik had four warrants of arrest for kidnapping and serious illegal detention.
He has been a hardcore member of the Abu Sayyaf since 2000, known for his close association with former Abu Sayyaf leaders Khadaffy Janjalani, Aldam Tilao alias Abu Sabaya, Isnilon Hapilon, and Hamsiraji Sali, said Pagdilao.
