HRET junks poll protest vs La Union lawmaker

SAN FERNANDO, La Union, Philippines – The House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal (HRET) has dismissed the election protest against La Union second district Rep. Eufranio Eriguel for lack of merit and affirmed his proclamation that was contested by his rival, former congressman Thomas Dumpit Jr.

In a 42-page decision, a copy of which was obtained by The STAR, the HRET chaired by Supreme Court Associate Justice Presbitero Velasco Jr. said the evidence presented by Dumpit failed to prove allegations of electoral fraud and irregularities. 

Based on the results of the revision and appreciation of ballots, the HRET said the margin of Eriguel over Dumpit even increased to 57,709 votes from the initial 57,614 votes.

“This clearly shows that no recovery in favor of the protestant (Dumpit) was established from the revision of ballots in the pilot protested clustered precincts,” the HRET said.

Sources said Dumpit would appeal the HRET decision.

Dumpit filed the protest just after the May 10, 2010 automated elections, alleging that he was cheated. He also filed a complaint with the Commission on Elections for Eriguel’s proclamation to be nullified.

“The HRET’s decision should finally erase whatever iota or doubt that my opponent foisted about my victory. I would like to appeal for the support of everyone as I pursue the awesome responsibilities of my position and the challenging task of serving my constituents,” Eriguel said.
