Ferry collides with barge off Cebu

- Evelyn Macairan -

MANILA, Philippines - A passenger ship with 265 passengers and crewmen on board reportedly collided with a barge off Cebu early yesterday morning, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said.

PCG spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Algier Ricafrente said they got information that the M/V Lite Ferry-8 collided with the barge Iron Man-1 anchored near Bantolinao Point in Lapu-Lapu City.

The ferry was reportedly carrying 221 passengers and 44 crewmembers when the incident happened.

Initial information showed that the ferry left Ormoc City in Leyte at around 10 p.m. Tuesday and was headed for Cebu when it hit the barge.

The M/V Ferry Lite-8 reportedly confirmed to the PCG that there was a slight collision, but that it was able to maneuver, thus averting further damage. It then proceeded with its voyage and safely arrived at Pier 4 at the Port of Cebu.
