6 dead in Lanao floods

MANILA, Philippines - Six people were killed in flash floods that hit Lanao del Norte last Thursday, disaster management officials said yesterday.

Ana Cañeda, Office of Civil Defense director for Northern Mindanao, said the six fatalities got drowned after heavy flooding hit Poona Piagapo town.

She said there was no reported displacement of local folk, as the floodwaters did not reach residential areas.

Cañeda said the bodies of most of the fatalities were retrieved last Friday at the lower end of the Mailunod River in Kauswagan town.

Poona Piagapo is a fifth-class municipality in Lanao del Norte and has a huge population of Maranaos.
