STA. ROSA CITY, Laguna, Philippines – At least 285 teachers and five students got sick after eating palabok or noodles served at the celebration of World Teachers’ Day in a stall at a mall here Tuesday morning.

Tina Ganzon, director for communications of the Department of Education, said most of the victims were rushed at the Sta. Rosa Community Hospital and other private hospitals after complaining of drowsiness, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach ache and headache.

"We were assured by the caterer that they would cover the medical expenses of our affected teachers. We have close coordination to ensure that victims’ needs are met,” Ganzon said.

Police Officer 2 John Marquez, desk officer of this town, said 43 of the 285 teachers are still under observation and remained confined at the community hospital.

Sta. Rosa City Schools Division Superintendent Belen Manzanero said the food samples were brought to the Bureau of Food and Drugs for examinataion.

“We don’t have any idea yet what component of the food caused the poisoning since it will take at least five to seven days to get the results,” she said. – Arnell Ozaeta, Cecille Suerte Felipe
