5.5 quake jolts Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines -  A magnitude 5.5 earthquake rattled some parts of the country yesterday but there were no reports of damage or injuries.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tremor occurred at 2:07 p.m. and was centered at 13 kilometers northwest of Dinagat, Surigao del Norte.

It was felt at Intensity 3 in Surigao City, Intensity 2 in Butuan City and Mainit, Surigao del Norte and Intensity 1 in Tacloban City.

Phivolcs said no damage but aftershocks are ex­pected.

The quake had a depth of 13 km and was tectonic in origin. Tectonic pertains to movement of the earth’s crust.
