Renaming of Kalantiaw building in P'sinan sought

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan, Philippines  – The Pangasinan Historical and Cultural Commission has recommended the renaming of the Kalantiaw building at the capitol complex here.

The Office of Gov. Amado Espino Jr. through provincial administrator Rafael Baraan endorsed to the provincial board a letter of Arabella Arcinue, president of Pangasinan Heritage Society, Inc., proposing the renaming of the Kalantiaw building to Palaris building in honor the heroic deeds of Pantaleon Perez popularly known among Pangasinan natives as “Palaris."

Arcinue’s letter cited historical accounts of the heroic deeds of Palaris in leading the Pangasinan rebels during the Spanish colonial period from 1762-1764.

It also raised the issue of fraudulence about the Code of Kalantiaw as well as information about Aklan being the birthplace of Datu Kalantiaw.

In a resolution dated Aug 25, 2011, the Pangasinan Historical and Cultural Commission said it was inappropriate to honor the Kalantiaw by naming a government building in after him and suggested instead to rename said building “to the venerable hero, Palaris, in honor and recognition of his contributions to Pangasinan history.”
