Baguio trash to be brought to Tarlac

MANILA, Philippines - The tons of garbage that broke loose when the retaining wall of the Irisan dump in Baguio City collapsed during heavy rains spawned by typhoon “Mina” last Saturday will be brought to Capas, Tarlac for proper disposal. 

This decision to move the 1,500 tons of trash to the Capas dump was arrived at during a joint meeting of regional and city disaster officials, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said yesterday.

“It was decided that all garbage collected will be transported directly to the Capas, Tarlac dump while a staging area in Barangay Irisan will serve as temporary holding area for the collected garbage,” the NDRRMC said in a report.

It added that soldiers, volunteers and regional and city disaster personnel would join hands to clear the Irisan dump and restore its collapsed retaining wall.

NDRRMC and Office of Civil Defense head Benito Ramos said the workers would be given anti-tetanus shots before they take part in the massive clearing operation. 

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and the Department of Social Welfare and Development, for their part, would provide food and drinking water to the workers.

Continuous, heavy rains spawned by typhoon Mina caused the retaining wall of the Irisan dump to collapse, resulting in a trash slide that left at least five people, mostly children, dead.  – With Artemio Dumlao
