NPAs show proof of life for Surigao mayor, 2 escorts

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The New People’s Army (NPA) has released an audio recording and pictures as proof that Mayor Henry Dano of Lingig, Surigao del Sur and his two military escorts are still alive and are in good health while in captivity.

In the recording, Dano asked the Armed Forces to suspend any operations to pave the way for their release.

Dano’s two escorts, Cpl. Alrey Villasis Desamparado and Pfc. Allan Pelino Saban, were said to belong to the military intelligence unit, hence their continued investigation while being held captive by the rebels.

“The audio message and pictures of the three NPA captives reveal that they are well, physically fit, and attended to by their NPA custodial force, consistent with the NPA’s policy of humane and lenient treatment of its captives and in accordance with Protocol I of the Geneva Conventions,” NDF-Southern Mindanao spokesperson Rubi del Mundo said in a statement.

Dano and his escorts were seized from the mayor’s residence in Lingig town last Aug. 6.

Meanwhile, the relatives of four personnel of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) who have been held captive by the NPA since last month are seeking their immediate release.

The families of Inspectors Eric Llamasares and Murphy Todyog and jail guards Rolando Bajuyo Jr. and Rogelio Begontes have been going around the region seeking help from government officials and peace advocacy groups in facilitating their release.

The captives’ families also appealed for a suspension of rescue operations to allow the rebels to communicate with them.

“I appeal to the government to stop the operations as the other side (NPA) is asking for it so that positive action can start,” said Todyog’s mother Ann Bomoway.

“It has been a month, and we want to hear from my husband how he is now,” said Llamasares’ wife Evalyn.

Meanwhile, Davao del Norte Gov. Rodolfo del Rosario has called for negotiations for the release of the four BJMP personnel. – With Jaime Laude
