Lahar threatens Albay folk anew

- Cet Dematera -

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines  – Disaster management officials of Albay have renewed their efforts for the continued relocation of residents around Mayon volcano due to the latest findings of government experts that lahar deposits remobilized by tropical storm “Juaning” now pose threats to villages at the foot of the volcano in case of heavy downpour.

Cedric Daep, chief of Albay’s Public Safety and Emergency Management Office, said they have sent teams to lahar-prone areas around Mayon to reiterate the standing relocation orders following the findings of a quick response team of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology that “lahars will be a continuing threat at and along all river channels draining the Mayon edifice.”

Alerted on lahar flows in case of heavy rains are the barangays of Maipon, Maninila, Tandarora, San Rafael, Iraya, Poblacion, Ilawod, Morera, Lower Binogsacan and Banao in Guinobatan town; Padang in Legazpi City; Miisi, Budiao, Banadero, Matnog and Salvacion in Daraga town; Anoling, Sua, Tumpa and Quirangay in Camalig town; Nasisi in Ligao City; and Buang and Buhian in Tabaco City.
